1790 US Federal Census

NORTH CAROLINA

The census takers (assistant marshals of the district courts) began their duties 2 Aug 1790 and were required to visit each household and take down the inhabitants' information, partly for the purpose of obtaining the total population and partly to determine each area's economic and military potential.  The completed reports were posted in two of the most public places in the district and remained there for the people to inspect.  The totals of each category were to be reported to the president.  Ellick Sanders was the assistant marshal of the Chatham, Randolph and Wake County portions of Hillsborough District.  Guilford Dudley reported for Moore County.

This portion of the 1790 census has been lost, but the above names are filed with the Census Bureau for this district and county because they appeared on county tax records there. However, I have not yet obtained copies of these records, so I am unable to post them at this time. For now, suffice it to say that these men and their families are considered to have been residents of this region in 1790.

Hillsborough District, Randolph County, North Carolina:
(John was the only Brewer in Randolph County who owned a slave in 1790)
