146. WILLIS B BREWER (NATHAN THOMAS, JOHN, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born on 14 Dec 1799 in Randolph County, North Carolina. He died in 1848 in Wolfe County, Kentucky.

Willis married MAHALIA MAYNARD about 1822 in Ashe County, North Carolina. Mahalia was born in 1802 in Ashe County, North Carolina. She died in 1892.

They had the following children.

147. JACOB FLETCHER BREWER (ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 19 Jun - 14 Oct 1794 in Hancock County, Georgia. He died in 1862/1865 in Benton Township, Polk County, Missouri. I would not here that Jacob's parentage has not yet been proven. Instead of Isaac, his father might have been Nimrod Brewer.  More research must be done before knowing for certain.  Nevertheless, it can be pretty safely assumed that he was a descendant of the same bunch of Brewers either way.

1808
The Crocker, Wakefield, Hooper, and Moore families migrated from Georgia to Illinois at about this time. At least some of them may have moved to Tennessee and then Illinois, but I can't remember where I read this. I don't know what year Jacob moved to Illinois. He doesn't appear on records there until 1820, when he was 26 years old.

1813 Marriage - Illinois?
Jacob and Edeith are believed to have married in 1813, but I don't know of any proof of this, or whether it's true that the marriage occurred in Illinois, since no record of Jacob has been found, to my knowledge, which shows Jacob in Illinois prior to 1820. A Moultrie County, Illinois history book states that Elizabeth Crocker (Edeith's mother) would not allow Keziah Crocker (Edeith's sister) to be married at home because her other daughters had run away to get married against her wishes. This account also stated that Elizabeth considered it to be bad luck afterwards for Keziah to get married at home. Since Edeith was married before Keziah and was also older, this indicates that Edeith was one of the daughters who had run away.  I can't help but think that there was something very special about Jacob, that would have caused Edeith to run away and married him, even though her mother didn't want her to.  Call me a hopeless romantic, but I figure that they must have fallen in love and she really wanted to be with him, even if it meant causing hard feeling between herself and her parents.

1863 Death of son, John Wesley Brewer (Union soldier) - Polk County, Missouri
Word reached Edeith that her son had been injured in the Civil War. Escorted by William Clark, Maranda's father, Edeith traveled by horse and wagon to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to bring him home. Maranda was the second wife of John Wesley Brewer's brother, Jacob Fletcher Brewer Jr. Another connection between the Clarks and the Brewers is that William Clark was the husband of John Wesley Brewer's sister-in-law, Mahulda "Hulda" Hunter. I had thought that John Wesley Brewer had also contracted small pox, but I don't remember where I heard that so I can't say for sure if it is true. John died sometime prior to 13 Aug 1863, when his wife, America, filed for a widow's pension.

Jacob married EDEITH "EDA" CROCKER, daughter of ARTHUR CROCKER and ELIZABETH WAKEFIELD, in 1813 in Illinois. Edeith was born about 1794 in Hancock County, Georgia. She died about 1865 in Benton Twp, Polk County, Missouri (last known residence).

Edeith could not read or write.

To give perspective as to where this land might have been, part of Edgecombe County became Granville County in 1746, part of which helped form Orange County in 1752.

Arthur Crocker is surely a relation to Jacob Fletcher Brewer's future wife, Edeith Crocker. Howell Brewer Sr had land along the same river during this time. Edeith's grandfather, Anthony Crocker was in Granville County, North Carolina when his will was written in 1754.

They also lived in the same area of Georgia in the late 1790's. There were Crockers in James City, Virginia as early as 1621 who survived the Indian uprising of 1622. The family was in Isle of Wright County, Virginia by the 1670's or 1680's.  The Brewers were there at that time as well.

I include this info to show that some of the Crockers and Brewers lived in somewhat close proximity to each other for generations.

148. NATHAN R (RUEBEN?) BREWER (War of 1812) (ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 14 Sep 1794 - 13 Sep 1795 in Georgia. He died after 1850 in Scott County, Missouri (last known residence).

His middle name might have been Reuben, due to naming custom of naming 4th son for father's oldest brother, although Nathan was likely the 2nd son, no I'm not sure.  He should have been named for his mother's father... Actually, going off of the 1850 census to determine Nathan's birth date, he was born between 14 Sept 1794 and 13 Sept 1795, which means that he and Jacob might have been twins. Perhaps, also, their mother died in childbirth.  Then the custom was sometimes to name the child after the deceased parent.  If Jacob was born first, maybe this is why he had the middle name of Fletcher, after his mother's maiden name, since he could not be named for her first name sinc she was a girl and he was a boy.  Just a thought...

Some older census records indicate that he was born between 1800 and 1810.  The 1850 one states he was born in 1795 which makes more sense if he was to be old enough to serve in the War of 1812

Reasons for thinking Nathan is Isaac's son (not proven) -
1) Both were in Georgia ca. 1812 (a Nathan Brewer was in Pray's 2nd Regiment (Militia) and Isaac was in Booth's 4th Regiment (Militia)
2) He lived next door to Isaac in McMinn County, Tennessee in 1830, reasonable age to be a son

3) His oldest son was named Isaac (19th century naming patterns suggested naming firstborn son after the father's father, see link above)

151. JOSEPH BREWER (ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 1811/1812 in Jackson County, Georgia. He died in 1874 near Cropwell or Kelly's Creek, St. Clair County, Alabama.

Naming customs suggest he could have been named for his father's 2nd oldest brother (don't think so) or his mother's eldest brother (more likely), if he was the 5th son. If so, some might have died young. Jacob Fletcher may have been the 1st son, Nathan R the 2nd, Joseph supposedly the 3rd, but naming patterns suggest there was one older than Jacob (he died?) who would have been named Howell for his father's father, then Jacob, then a 3rd son (who would have been named for his father (he died also?), then a 4th son named for his father's oldest brother (probably Nathan R (Rueben?)), then a 5th son (Joseph) - named for father's 2nd oldest brother (doesn't make any sense unless there's one we don't know about) or else his mother's oldest brother (don't know anything about her family). Of course, not everyone followed these naming customs exactly, so this information is included strictly as a guideline or for the sake of interest.

4 Apr 1851, Joseph Brewer gave an affidavit to support her father Isaac's application for Revolutionary War Pension, indicating that he was literate, at least to the point of being able to sign his name. A letter written to the pension office a bit later was in totally different handwriting, so I believe that the first was written by a local official, and the letter by Joseph. I think it very safe to say that he could read and write proficiently.

Since he died before receiving his full pay, his father asked for what was due him (Columbus had no wife or children to claim the money).  The amount due was $11.00 for one month of wages and $28.49 for 77 days of clothing allowance at 37 cents per day, amounting in total to $39.49.

153. LITTLEBURY WHITECOTTON (orphan raised by Isaac and Sarah) (ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born on 1 Jul 1812 in Georgia. He died on 11 Jun 1877 in Herrins Prairie, Williamson County, Illinois.

Possible birth parents - Tipton Whitecotton (born 1788 in Henry County, Virginia, died about 1844 in Habersham County, Georgia) and Francis Polly Dillen (born about 1787 in Henry County, Virginia). The odd thing is that his father was still alive, when Littlebury and Eliza were supposedly orphaned. It is possible that Tipton's death date is wrong, that they are not their parents, or that their father farmed them out because he couldn't support or take care of them on his own and never remarried.

Source - Illinois State Archives ➚*James J Whitecotton was in the same company.  His full name might be James Jasper Whitecotton, likely same man as Jasper Whitecotton, Charles' brother.  I am guessing that he was named for James Jasper Brewer, son of Littlebury Whitecotton's step brother, Joseph Brewer. They enlisted on the same day and in the same place.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Herrin, Illinois, joining 15 Nov 1869, and was considered to be a "wonderful devoted soul" known as "Uncle Abe". He remained a respected member for almost 70 years.

154. ELIZA WHITECOTTON (orphan raised by Isaac and Sarah) (ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 1819 in Georgia. She died after 1880 in Western, Williamson County, Illinois (last known residence).

29 Apr 1850, Eliza (Whitecotton) Walker stated that she was a poor orphan girl taken in by the Isaac Brewer family and raised as a part of their family until she reached the age of 20.  She stated in her affidavit that she remembers Isaac speaking of his Revolutionary War experiences and of his being wounded during the war.  This statement was given in support of Isaac's application for a pension.

On ancestry.com it says that her parents were Tipton Whitecotton and Francis Polly Dillen but they were still alive when she was supposedly an orphan and taken in by Isaac Brewer.

Evidently Black Snake John Brewer was a bit of a scary fellow when he got riled up! 

"Lucy rode on the back of the horse behind Joseph to attend the Laurel River Association (of Baptist churches) which meant at Silver Creek Baptist Church in Rockcastle County.  There they met "Black Snake John" Brewer. When he found out they were Brewer's, he insisted that they go home with him. (Black Snake John was the oldest son of Joab Brewer, oldest Son of Howell Cobb Brewer, brother of Prettyman Brewer). He lived on top of Peach Orchard Mountain. Joe and Black Snake John got into an argument about religion and Lucy was so frightened that she would have made her father take her home, except that they couldn't see to get down off the mountain in the dark. Lucy was about 15 years old at this time."
