Historical background of Brunswick County, Virginia -
St. Andrew's Parish originally covered all of Brunswick County, which was formed in 1720 from Prince George County. Brunswick gained additional land from Surry and Isle of Wright Counties in 1732. St. Andrews Parish was split in 1753 and, thereafter, Meherrin Parish covered part of its territory. Greensville County was cut from Brunswick's eastern portion in 1780, which is why some of the Brewer land, though patented in Brunswick County, is actually now located in present day Greensville County. Following the formation of Greensville, both parishes covered parts of both counties.
Early settlements -
Fort Christanna was located at Lawrenceville and was a stockade used to educate the Indians from 1714-1718. Its operation brought the first flood of English settlers. The original county courthouse was erected a few miles north of there in 1732. Hick's Ford or Hicksford, which became known as Emporia in 1887, was formed in 1710 at a major crossroads, and where the Fort Road crossed the Meherrin River on its way to Fort Christanna.

George2 was not among the family members appointed to help clear land in 1736 to Beaver Pond Creek.
He didn't inherit land in his father's 1741 will, probated 1744. The land of George1 was between Fountain & Rattlesnake Creeks, and on both sides of Roanoke Road.
Concerning the tract on the left, note from the map above that Falling Run is south of Meherrin River. | ||

This record specifically states that James was George's son. Because James is not mentioned in George's will, the document is especially valuable.

George owned this land at the time his will was written in 1760, but I haven't located any patent or record of purchase. It is possible that his father gave it to him prior to the creation of his father's will in 1741, since his father had land nearby between Fountain and Rattlesnake Creeks.

George and his sons Howell Sr, William, John & Lanier were appointed 6 Dec 1736 to help clear a road 1/2 mile from the river to Beaver Pond Creek, indicating they lived in that area in 1736.
Lanier was not given land in his father's 1741 will, probated 1744. George's land was between Fountain & Rattlesnake Creeks, and on both sides of Roanoke Road. Lanier had sold his patented land to relatives by the Spring of 1752. This might be when he and his family moved to North Carolina. |
