Other notes concerning John Lanier Sr -
John Lanier Sr was the paternal grandfather of Sarah Lanier, wife of George1 Brewer. Lucreece has long been assumed to be John's wife, probably since they are listed together on the immigration record above. However, it is now suspected that she was, instead, his sister, and that John's wife's name is unknown. (see research of Foy Varner ➚)

John and Lucreece were transported by Howell Pryce, who received a patent in return, in April of 1657 (should be 25 Feb 1659?). Maybe Howell applied for the patents Apr 1657 and received them 25 Feb 1659. At any rate, we know that John and Lucreece Lanier immigrated from England to Virginia sometime prior to one of these dates, possibly several months or even several years before, as these headright patents were not necessarily received promptly.

John played a part in Bacon's rebellion, on the rebel side. He resided on the south side of the James River. In 1676, he and John Woodlief were sent by the men of Charles City County to plead with Governor Berkeley to allow them to go against the Indians, at their own expense, having borne great afflictions at their hands. The governor refused, calling them "fools and loggerheads". The men then chose to fight of their own accord, without the governor's permission, resulting in Bacon's Rebellion. It sounds as though John Lanier Sr, the immigrant ancestor, was the one who represented the people in petitioning the governor, while his son, John Lanier Jr joined the fighting forces of the rebels.
